Is the iPad too heavy?

I have read some complaints regarding the iPad weight. Some users where expecting a big iPod touch with almost the same weight. It is not realistic to think on these terms if you read the iPad specification. We have to take into account that the iPad has a screen of 9.7 inches (3.5 inches the iPod), and 10 hours of video reproduction (6 hours the iPod). With such a big screen and autonomy, they need to stuff in a huge battery to achieve its performance, and this is part of the reason for the weight and width (13.4 millimeters, 8.5 the iPod). Note that only the iPad battery (148g) is heavier that the iphone (135g).

Here you have a weight breakdown if you are curious (information from iFixit):

  • Aluminum back: 138g
  • Battery: 148g
  • LCD: 153g
  • Glass (and frame): 193g
  • Speaker: 17g
  • Main board: 21g
  • Everything else: 27g

So, I do not see the point on the weight complain, in fact any 200 pages book will be as heavy as the iPad and bulkier.

I do not understand either the folks that compares the iPad with the Kinddle. They are simply different tools. I you are a big reader and spend lot of your time ready books, the Kinddle is the way to go. But, if you are looking for more that just read books, the iPad could be for you.

By the way, today, the iPad is on pre-order in spain and some other countries!!!
